This week gamers get the opportunity to take some of their favorite franchises on the road. Do these new franchises do their big brothers justice or should you let them just pass on by? Let’s take a closer look.
When we all learned that Grand Theft Auto was coming to the Nintendo DS, some, including yours truly, had their reservations. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars takes the open world franchise to the small screens with the same gameplay but a new art style. The cartoon style definitely helps the series fit onto the hand held console. As does the top-down perspective that many will recall from the first two games in the series. Only having played a few minutes of the game, it seems like it can be a bit too far removed from the action but works well for fans of the franchise to have a great time with it.
One genre that has had a tough go on hand held systems is first person shooters. The PSP’s lack of a second thumbstick has made this transition from home to hand held even harder. Resistance: Retribution attempts take a well known FPS and transition it to the third person shooter realm. A lot of the same problems still remain whether the shooting be in first or third person but the Resistance franchise has a big following and that may be enough to make this game a big hit.
Other notable releases this week:
Ready 2 Rumble Revolution (Wii)
Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure (DS)
Hasbro Family Game Night (XBLA)
Wheel of Fortune (PSN)
