New Releases 11/10/2008: First Person…

Another week, more big releases in Q4. This week is headlined by a couple of first person perspective games. Games that use that perspective almost always require that you use a gun to advance and dispatch enemies. This week, that notion is only half right.

Call of Duty: World at War is the highest profile release this week and deservedly so. This is the next in line in the Call of Duty franchise to follow the hugely successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The game returns you to World War II and is, like the much-maligned Call of Duty 3, developed by Infinity Ward’s Activision cousin, Treyarch. Judging by the beta, the game is EXTREMELY similar to COD4. Some, including myself, would go as far as to say the game feels like a skin with different, WWII-era weapons. Fans of the series, if they are still clamoring for more COD, will not be disappointed.

Departing from shooting in the first person perspective is Mirror’s Edge. In the game, there is actually an achievement for NOT shooting anyone throughout the entire story mode. While not shooting, you can perform amazingly fluid and fast parkour-esque maneuvers to run illecit packages throughout a city under the control of a totalitarian regime. The fast, fluid and exhilarating gameplay may be a great juxtaposition for many gamers playing other games this holiday season which are slower and more plodding in their pace.
