Nintendo has announced that Mario Kart Wii will be available in the US on April 27th.
The announcement immediately raised two huge questions in my head. First, what games are coming to the Wii in the second half of 2008? Second, who wins in the titanic April showdown of Mario Kart Wii and Grand Theft Auto IV?
Nintendo made its first of three known big releases this week in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. We also know that Wii Fit will be hitting store shelves on May 19th. So, with release of Mario Kart Wii in April, what does that leave for the second half of 2008 including, most importantly, the holiday season?
To say that I had any idea of what was coming the rest of this year from Nintendo would be a lie but I will say that I fully expect Nintendo to announce at least one huge title at E3. They have to or this Christmas many Wii owners are going to be wondering what to do with the Wii as the Xbox 360 and PS3 get many huge releases throughout Q4.
As for the showdown with Grand Theft Auto IV, sorry to say it Nintendo fans, Mario Kart Wii has no chance. This will be the moment when the tide turns. The Wii may be the “it” thing right now but Mario Kart Wii is going to be trounced the week of April 27th as Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360 and PS3 versions combined) will triple the sales of Wii title.
What do you think of the Wii’s nonexistent second half of ’08 lineup and its showdown with GTA IV?
